Government encourages growth of property maintenance sector on Wed 23rd December, 2009

In the December 2009 pre-Budget report, the Government mooted its intentions to introduce a boiler scrappage scheme. As part of the scheme, householders will be given an amount of money in return for replacing an old boiler with a new one.,, is fully in support of the scheme. William Davies, managing director, comments: “It will encourage householders to save money in the long-term, through using a more efficient boiler, and they will also become more energy economical. In fact, I believe the scheme has real energy efficiency undertones.

“I also believe the Government is showing its support for the property maintenance sector. The scheme will undoubtedly result in an influx of homeowners looking to cash in and upgrade their boilers, which will inevitably result in more work for the maintenance industry.”

Davies also believes that the manufacturing sector will see a boost, as more boilers are produced to meet demand through the scheme.

However, he does have his reservations around the Government’s timing of the announcement, and added:

“There is one downside to all of this; now that the Government has announced its intentions, this could result in a lull for the next few months – until the scheme is effectively launched. Homeowners who were thinking of upgrading their boilers are likely to put their plans on hold and wait until April 2009, which could – potentially – be damaging for the sector in the short–term. And, if a boiler needs to be replaced, then it’s better to have a new one installed during the harsh winter months, when it needs to work its hardest.”
