Frequently asked questions

What scents or sprays will keep birds away?

Scents or sprays will not reliably deter birds. Sprays that emit scents will only last a short time outdoors and do not last long enough to change bird behaviour.

Birds, including pigeons, do not respond to smells in the same way that mammals do. Even if spray products are used regularly, birds soon become used to them and are not deterred. Wind and rain quickly disperse scents used to deter birds outdoors.

In addition, strong instincts such as nesting and feeding override any discomfort a spray or scent deterrent might cause.

Why are pigeons so hard to get rid of?

Pigeons quickly develop a strong attachment to good nesting, roosting, and feeding sites and will persist staying in an area that provides them. This is what can make them seem difficult to get rid of.

Adult pigeons will return to nest sites they have used previously. They also get used to people being around, visual decoys, and noise deterrents.

What is the most effective pigeon scarer?

Our pest controllers cannot recommend visual or audio scarers as long-term deterrents for pigeons. They quickly become used to scarers when nesting, roosting, and feeding instincts are strong.

Visual and audio bird scarers may work for a short amount of time. However, physical deterrents are almost always needed to break a pigeon’s attachment to a building. Physical deterrents deny access to a building and prevent places where pigeons can safely land.
