There are three specific types of damp proofing defined by British Standard BS8102:2002:

• Type A: Barrier Protection prevents moisture from entering a property. Techniques for this type of damp proofing include waterproof render or liner application to stop penetrating damp, and DPC injection for rising damp problems.
• Type B: Structurally Integral Protection covers the building’s design and materials to resist water penetration. This would include water-resistant concrete used during the build process.
• Type C: Drained Protection allows water to enter the property and removes it in a controlled way, such as channelling water for removal via a sump pump. Cavity drain membranes and drainage systems are effective techniques.
