Fascinating Facts

Two squirrels chewing their way into a houseNative to North America, the Grey Squirrel has thrived since being introduced to Britain in the late 1800's. Since then it has adapted and out - competed the Red Squirrel, and is now regarded as a significant threat to our local native species.

Being a rodent with large, sharp incisors they are capable of causing serious damage to houses (lofts etc) and woodlands, parks and forestry. With such rampant expansion of populations, the Grey Squirrel is now considered a pest, and many rural control programmes are in place across Britain.

Urban areas provide conditions under which it is able to thrive, with food and harbourage in abundance. Grey squirrels feed on acorns, tree shoots, flowers, nuts, fruits, roots and cereals. They bury surplus food 2-5cm below the soil or in tree hollows. They feed at ground level and have the ability to digest acorns, more so than red squirrels.

They are many options available for the control of the Grey Squirrel, but the only solution for long term successful control is proofing in domestic situations. We do not get involved in forestry or commercial woodland control.

Squirrels are diurnal: repeat activity daily, active from before sunrise to after sunset and females are pregnant for around one month and produce a litter of three to four kittens.
