During the 4th Annual Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, (http://www.covictim.org/HomePage), leading property maintenance and refurbishment company, aspect.co.uk (www.aspect.co.uk), provides its top tips on making homeowners ‘gas aware’.

Here Andy Harris, gas services manager for aspect.co.uk, comments:

• Get your boiler serviced. Don’t wait for the winter to set in before you have your boiler serviced. The earlier you do it, the easier it will be to find an engineer. And, make sure that you continue to maintain your boiler on an annual basis.

• Fit a Carbon Monoxide alarm, and read the instructions properly, to know whereabouts it needs to be placed in the property.

• All UK landlords must have a Landlords Gas Safety certificate; this is a legal requirement and will highlight any faults with the boiler.

He adds: “Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a killer, and it is important for homeowners and landlords to be made aware of the risks. It is vital for boilers to be checked and regularly maintained; only then will we incidents be avoided.

“A gas and plumbing inspection will check all elements and provide guidance on what needs doing. And, it is important to note that planned installations are always more cost-effective than reactive work.”
