Drain cleaning chemicals

When a toilet becomes blocked, or is draining slowly, most people try using a chemical product to clear it.

If this doesn’t work, be wary of using another product. Mixing different chemicals can damage primary plastic drainage pipes. Chemical reactions can take place that could thin pipes by corrosion.

Excessive use of strong drain cleaning chemicals over time can also cause damage. If a toilet drain gets blocked regularly, a drainage engineer should investigate potential issues. This could help avoid bigger problems in the future.

Will flushing clear a blocked toilet?

A clogged or blocked toilet can happen as a result of either the build-up of multiple insoluble items that have been building up over a period of time, or a large amount of material being flushed away at once, toilet paper for example.

If you flush a full cistern of water into a toilet that appears to be blocked you’re taking a risk that the weight of water will be enough to clear the blockage. This is often not the case and the toilet could easily overflow.

For most people, the prospect of trying to clear a blocked toilet isn’t a pleasant one. Even if you have a standard plunger and a pair of rubber gloves at hand. It assumes the blockage is within the trap of the toilet itself. However, more often than not, it’s further down the pipework or in the soil stack.

Our specialist drainage engineers are on call 24/7 to help, no matter what type of blockage you have.
