Businesses expect a 30 percent slump during Olympic Games on Fri 3rd August, 2012
Well-known retail and restaurant chains are net down during the Olympic Games, and many are starting to fear they won’t see any pick up.
London-based property maintenance and refurbishment company, aspect.co.uk, which provides services to a large number of well known retail and restaurant chains, is receiving feedback from its commercial client base that business has been down – by as much as 30 percent in some cases – since the start of The Games.
Managing director, William Davies, commented: “We have all questioned whether or not retail businesses would thrive or struggle to survive during the Olympic Games, and judging by general client feedback – it seems the latter has been the case so far.
“However, on a more positive note, we have seen a real uplift in London’s homeowners making refurbishment bookings. These range from new bathrooms and kitchens, to full property refurbishments, with sales at a level not seen since the onset of the financial crisis – up nearly 40 percent. Perhaps the Olympic Games have got people into a more positive mindset, in terms of the future prospects relating to the economy.”
The firm launched a special page on its site: http://www.aspect.co.uk/olympictraffic/, providing a live travel feed each day based on updates from its team of 150 or so engineers travelling around fixing London’s maintenance issues.
So far, the feed has highlighted that there is noticeably less traffic in and around The Games, and that the main areas of congestion are on the arterial routes into London. Interestingly, west of the Capital seems to have had the most delays so far.
“With such a large number of vehicles and engineers on the road 24/7, we are in a unique position to gain a real insight into what is happening when it comes to the traffic situation across the capital. It would seem that people are heeding to the advice given, and that – so far – there hasn’t been the anticipated congestion.”
